Why you should be a plant parent.

Are you at a stage where you’re not ready for kids? Maybe you don’t have enough space or time for a pet. Being a plant parent is a rewarding alternative to kids or pets. All you need to do is go to Bunnings or your local nursery and choose one you connect with. Your plant child is low maintenance; it only needs some soil, a suitable-sized pot, sunlight, and water. You can get very low-maintenance plants such as cacti and bamboo (which are nearly impossible to kill).

Having indoor plants can result in many benefits for your mental health and well-being. Plants have been used in mental health practice and horticultural therapy. Horticultural therapy is a process in which plants and gardening activities are utilised to improve people's body, mind, and spirit from all ages and backgrounds.

I lived alone in a small apartment and received a plant as a birthday present from my aunt. At first, I didn’t understand what the benefit was of owning a plant. After a few weeks, I grew fond of caring for my house plant. I even gave him the name George Clooney. George Clooney made me feel proud of nursing a living thing and he made me feel less alone. Having a plant in my tiny apartment (a place with ugly furniture that was not mine) gave it some personality and made it feel like a home.

Houseplants can improve your health. Plants create cleaner air and can clear humidity up in your house. Plants have also been proven to have a calming effect when you are sick and speed up your recovery time. If you have allergies like me indoor plants can become your new best friend. Plants have air-purifying powers that can help with asthma symptoms and pollutants.

Plants can also have healing properties such as aloe vera. As a young child, I got a painful sunburn on my nose. My mum cut open an aloe vera stem and rubbed the soothing gel on my nose. The next day my sunburn was healed.

Indoor plants are living décor, adding vibrancy and brightening your space. Houseplants come in all shapes and different sizes to suit your space. Houseplants come in standing pots, hanging pots and vertical gardens. Green has also been shown to create good vibes in your working space. Working from home can be frustrating at times. Having a plant nearby can give you a mental boost and reduce stress when working.

Becoming a plant parent was one of the best choices I ever made. I hope you find as much fulfilment as I can in caring for my little plant babies.
