My Book Review of the Inheritance Games by Jennifer Lynn Barnes

I like to call myself a casual reader. I typically take me a week or two to get through a book. The Inheritance Games I finished in two sittings. The Inheritance Games is part of the mystery and thriller genre.

I liked Jennifer Lynn Barnes's straightforward, simple, fast-paced writing style. She can set the scene without resorting to flowery language, which I often find annoying in the Young Adult Fiction genre.

Barnes keeps the reader in suspense, balancing how much information she withholds and reveals to the reader. I also really enjoyed the characters in the series. Avery is such a treat! She has such a good head on her shoulders and is a relatable and likable protagonist.

Barnes does an excellent job of getting straight into action, and we are introduced immediately to high schooler Avery and her sister Libby, who are barely scraping. Then, in a twist, Avery is the sole inheritor of a multi-billion fortune of the Hawthorne family after the family's patriarch, Tobias Hawthorne, passes. The Hawthorne family and Avery are shocked at the reading of Tobias's will. (Can you blame the Hawthorne for being a little upset about losing their family fortune).

The Hawthorne family is made up of four brothers. Nash, Grayson, Jamieson and Xander.

The second eldest brother, Grayson, who was going to be the heir of the Hawthorne empire, Grayson is suspicious of Avery and thinks she is a con artist and a threat to his family. Grayson is stone-cold and professional and always wears a perfectly tailored suit.

Avery catches the eye of Jamieson Hawthorne, the family troublemaker fond of giving nicknames, parkour and solving mysteries. Jamison is charming, competitive and a little on the self-destructive side.

Xander, the youngest, is our sweetie who gives us comic relief and is a great friend to Avery. Nash's eldest is our good old country boy who wants no part in the Hawthrone fortune.

Avery can have it all; she must live in the Hawthorne Mansion for one year.

The house that Avery lives in is a giant mansion filled with puzzles and clues expertly hidden inside its walls,

Can Avery and the Hawthorne boys solve the mystery, puzzles, and secrets Tobias left for them? You will have to read to find out.

I would give the Inheritance Games 5/5 stars.

(Summary sourced from Goodreads)

Avery Grambs has a plan for a better future: survive high school, win a scholarship, and get out. But her fortunes change in an instant when billionaire Tobias Hawthorne dies and leaves Avery his entire fortune. The catch? Avery has no idea why -- or even who Tobias Hawthorne is.

To receive her inheritance, Avery must move into sprawling, secret passage-filled Hawthorne House, where every room bears the old man's touch -- and his love of puzzles, riddles, and codes. Unfortunately for Avery, Hawthorne House is also occupied by the family that Tobias Hawthorne just dispossessed. This includes the four Hawthorne grandsons: dangerous, magnetic, brilliant boys who grew up with every expectation that one day, they would inherit billions. Heir apparent Grayson Hawthorne is convinced that Avery must be a conwoman, and he's determined to take her down. His brother, Jameson, views her as their grandfather's last hurrah: a twisted riddle, a puzzle to be solved. Caught in a world of wealth and privilege, with danger around every turn, Avery will have to play the game herself just to survive.
