Grandpacore is one of Pinterest's top trending styles so far in 2024. Don't worry you do not need to raid your Grandad's closet to get on board with this trend. Grandpacore is more of a vibe than a style; it focuses on high-quality pieces, comfort and celebrating all things eclectic.
Some items you may find in the Grandpacore style are chunky sweaters, colourful vests, loafers, baggy pants, blazers, gingham and pinstripe patterns. Everyone can try the Grandpacore style! It's a gender-neutral style celebrating individualism and playing with proportion or pattern.
If you want to embody this style, try a few of these suggestions.
Play with the pattern by choosing two pieces with similar colours but mismatching patterns.
Try an oversized coat or blazer, think of slouchy vibes.
Rock some clear glasses or a gingham cap.
Try different materials like cashmere or fleece; the softer, the better.
Workwear is a total Grandpa vibe! Try some old-school denim, corduroy or a canvas jacket.
We can learn so many things from our Grandpa's regarding fashion, which may shock some of you. I will share a story; we have the cutest elderly Italian man who lives on our street; he always wears vests, bow ties, suit pants and a beret. He never goes anywhere beyond walking his dog or going to the shops. Yet he still wears clothes considered too fancy or old-fashioned because he is not bothered by what anyone else thinks.
The elderly have a lifetime to form individual styles and are not as influenced by trends. This means older people can more easily express and cultivate their own unique style. Our Grandads are not scrolling on Instagram, falling prey to fashion trends. The more we consume, the more greedy we become, buying into more micro-trends and wasting our money.
Clothes used to be more expensive and less widely available in our Grandad's generation. This meant our Grandparents would often choose more quality materials that were made to last. We can take this same mindset by being more mindful of what our clothes are made of and whether they will last.
Op-shop clothes can often feel like they are made of better materials, which is mostly true. Clothes were made better in the past when clothes were more handcrafted and not mass-produced like they are now. If you can, try purchasing from brands that source and make their clothes ethically. The best way to do this is by researching and buying from smaller brands.
The most sustainable way to source your clothes is to thrift shop or shop in your wardrobe. The essence of Grandpacore is using what you already have to express your style! Be Grandpa and be confident in what you wear!
