Glowing fairy lights, the scent of food cooking and the bustle of the city; what else could I be talking about other than the Winter Night Market! It is my first time going to Winter Night Market since covid. I have such good memories of going out with my friends after uni to get a bite to eat.
It was a chilly night on Wednesday as we made our way to the famous Queen Victoria Market. My partner's stomach was audibly rumbling, I needed to get him something to eat soon, or he would be hangry.
The crowd was insane; I had never seen the Winter Night Market so busy. Everyone was pushing and shoving each other to get to the vendors. I felt very uncomfortable. There was nowhere to sit down, and the market felt very overcrowded.
There were many different food vendors, with yummy options such as souvlaki, kebabs, paella, bao, pasta, calamari, churro bowls, crème brûlée, cotton candy and many more.
My partner and I got a lobster roll from a seafood vendor. The roll was very buttery and had delicious mayo, fresh veg and well-cooked lobster. I overall really enjoyed it! My meal was expensive, with each roll costing 22 dollars, for less protein than I expected for the price.
The crowds were so bad my partner and I could not even queue up to get a dessert. Instead, we went to San Churro and shared some churros (which were heavenly).
The Victorian Winter Night Market has lost its charm. It's no longer a social experience where you can stroll leisurely through the market, get cheap eats, and watch the vendors cook delicious meals. The market is overhyped, overcrowded and overpriced.
My recommend to you would be you skip the lines and eat at your local restaurants instead!
