Gen Z Words You Should Know

Welcome to the digital era, where language is evolving faster than ever before! If you've ever found yourself puzzled by the cryptic acronyms and colourful expressions sprinkled throughout social media and internet conversations, fear not; you're not alone. In this blog, we're embarking on an exciting journey to understanding the fascinating world of Gen Z slang - a vocabulary that's reshaping the way we communicate in the 21st century.



I belong to Generation Z, having been born in 1998. This generation spans from the mid-1990s to the early 2010s. We grew up in the era of information and technology, where smartphones have become an extension of our hands. We are well-versed in technology and have unprecedented access to information and communication compared to previous generations.


Allow me to assist you in deciphering the slang used by Gen Z, so you won't have to pretend to understand anymore. I sometimes do not even know all the new slang or lingo so do not be embarrassed if you have never used these words before.


Cheugy

The word "cheugy" is used to describe something or someone that is considered uncool. This term originated from describing individuals who were unsuccessful in their attempts to make something popular. For instance, a sentence like "Sarah is attempting to make ripped jeans trendy, but it's so cheugy" would be an example of this usage.

Drip

"Drip drip" is a phrase used by Gen Z to express admiration for someone's fashionable and trendy outfit. It refers to the overall look or style of the person.



Low Key

This is used as a more subtle adjective to express a person who is moderately excited about something.


Vibing

To "take it easy" or "chill out" means to relax. It has a similar meaning to "chilling."



Slay

To slay means to do something really well. You could say, "Taylor Swift slayed her concert's opening song".

No Cap

This term Gen Z used to say I am for real, or I am not lying.

Slaps

This is an adjective used to describe if something is excellent or exceptional. You could use the word slaps to describe a song that you really enjoy.

W or L

Is shorthand for win or lose.


Rizz

Rizz refers to the ability to charm or impress someone. For instance, Adam has mad rizz. Did you witness him at the club the other night when he effortlessly got the phone numbers of three girls?

Stan

The term "stan" is used to describe being a big fan of someone. For instance, if I say "I stan Ariana from Vanderpump Rules," it means I am a huge fan of her. On the other hand, "staning" means really liking something. So, if I say "I am really standing Lady Gaga's new song at the moment," it means I am enjoying it a lot.


Fam

"Fam" is a term commonly used by the Gen Z generation to refer to close friends within their social circle. For instance, a person might say "Adam, come on fam, I really need you to come to Hawaii with me."


Salty

Being "salty" refers to feeling jealous or harbouring negative emotions towards someone. For instance, if Jennifer finished the last of the ice cream in the refrigerator, I might say, "I'm feeling pretty salty about it.

Boujee

The term "boujee" is often used to refer to individuals who enjoy luxurious and materialistic things. Such persons may be perceived as excessive, ostentatious, or fond of extravagant possessions. For instance, "Natalie is so boujee she only wears designer clothes".


Basic

Is an adjective used to describe someone or something that is unoriginal or boring. For example "Every girl wears white vans. Its so basic! I am going to buy a purple pair instead"



Pick me girl

A "pick me" girl is someone who seeks validation from males and tries to stand out from other girls in order to gain their attention. An example of something a pick me girl might say is "I'm not like other girls. I play football and can hang out with the guys."



Simp

A slang term used to describe someone who excessively admires or gives attention to another person
