MAFs might be the trashiest reality show on television, yet millions of people are tuning in religiously (including myself) from Sunday to Wednesday. The amount of gaslighting this season has gone to new heights: a cheating scandal, body shaming, racism and emotional manipulation. Many viewers are concerned about the well-being of the brides. This season Harrison Boon, Shannon Adams, Adam Seed and Jesse Burford have shown 'toxic heterosexual male energy', which has become a staple of the MAF's franchise. It is time to call out the questionable behaviour of this year's grooms.
Jesse Burford (Mr not so nice guy)
All season I have been shocked by the fan reception of Jesse. Fans have very selective memory when it comes to Jesse. Jesse was blatantly rude to his on-screen wife, Claire Nomarhas, in his constant attempts to silence her on the Honeymoon. Jesse tried to dim Claire's light by labelling her 'annoying', 'too much' and 'loud'.
Honestly, can anyone blame Claire for cheating? Jesse was too busy calling her names and rolling his eyes to win Claire over. I can see fault in Claire for keeping the cheating secret; however, at least she did come clean to Jesse. Claire did her best to atone for the infidelity, taking Jesse on dates like racquetball and playing music together. Jesse does start to warm up to Claire, until Harrison plants doubt over Claire's intentions behind staying in the experiment. Jesse quickly feels paranoid and leaves in the following commitment ceremony.
Adam Seed (That seedy guy)
There was just always something about Adam. Since he walked down the aisle with his wife, Janelle Han, something felt suss about him. On the wedding day, Janelle's brothers question his career, and Adam never directly answers what he does for a living. Despite Janelle's family's concern after discovering his nonstable job and cheating, Janelle still trusts him. However, Janelle's trust is broken when Adam kisses fellow cast member Claire. Adam just flat-out denies the cheating until Claire fesses up. Then, Adam gaslights Janelle; he offers no apology and blames the fact they were not good in the first few weeks of their marriage. This man is the true king of deflection.
Shannon Adams (A pure asshole)
Shannon may have gotten little screen time, however, seeing this man as a piece of work only takes a second. First, Shannon tore down his wife Caitlin McConville's self-confidence. During the first commitment ceremony, he then revealed he is still in love with his ex. Further on, during Intimacy Week, Shannon made body-shaming remarks about Caitlin. To top that, he said he would not be thinking about his ex if Caitlin were more attractive. Why does it seem like at least one groom has to body shame his wife every season?
Dan Hunjas (big douche energy)
Dan never seemed to give his wife a chance. He was too busy hanging at Bondi and going to the gym, whilst poor Sandy Jawanda was stuck in the apartment, wondering where her husband was. According to So Dramatic, Dan was seeing his four secret girlfriends. Dan was not being faithful to his wife. Dan was caught boasting about his ex-partner's appearance and saying degrading comments during the butt dial scandal. Dan divulged the couple's sex life during the last dinner party without Sandy's consent. What an absolute pig! Sandy is better off being away from this walking red flag.
Harrison Boon (the gaslighter)
Harrison may be the biggest gaslighter we have seen since Bryce Ruthven. Harrison is so toxic that he poisons other relationships and creates drama. Harrison and Bronte Schofield did not have the hottest start. One of Bronte's friends confided that Harrison was speaking to a girl on outside just a day before the wedding. Bronte decided to trust Harrison at face value. Then on the Honeymoon, he slept with Bronte shortly before telling her she is not attractive anymore. Additionally, Harrison got a girl's number on a night out with boys, despite his marriage. He put great effort into portraying a different image of himself and his relationship with Bronte, even going so far as to fake cry in front of the experts to appear empathetic of Bronte’s endometriosis.
Harrison is shown to get involved in everyone's problems. He was the cause of Jesse and Claire's breakup when he commented that Claire is only staying in the experiment to fix her image. Harrison also caused the fight between Layton and Melinda on the retreat when he exposed Melinda Willis for spying on the boys. Harrison also manipulated Bronte into staying on the experiment, despite dumping her via text just days before. This man is just the worst; you can tell the energy drains from the room whenever this man walks in
